Our Journey

A Regional Movement for Climate and Energy Cooperation

The South Asian Regional Parliamentary Forum for Climate, Energy and Environment (SARPF) first met at the sidelines of COP27 in Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt. In 2022, a group of concerned parliamentarians reached a consensus to establish a regional forum to advance energy cooperation. Later, in 2023, SARPF network parliamentarians and the secretariat conducted country consultations in Bangladesh, Nepal, Sri Lanka, and Bhutan.

Steering Committee members representing each participating country joined a group delegation to COP29 in Baku, Azerbaijan, in 2024, with the demand for more policy focus on a regional approach to climate policies in South Asia. The delegation met with negotiation leads from Bhutan, Nepal, Sri Lanka, and India, as well as the Prime Minister of Bhutan, Tshering Tobgay, and the President of Nepal, Ram Chandra Poudel.

On 18th December 2024, Dr Bhupendra Yadav, Indian Minister of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, formally launched SARPF alongside Kamlesh Paswan, State Minister of Rural Development; Dr Sanjay Jaiswal, MP and SARPF Chairperson; and Ajay Mathur, Director General of the International Solar Alliance. More than 35 MPs from India, Nepal, Sri Lanka, and Bhutan participated in the inaugural event.
